I've been floating in circles in my little boat in a big, big sea for a long while, looking at a few distant islands for some time. I've been inspired by a few strong artists to decide on what I would like to do most, and then just go for it. I am working on a new storyboard web portfolio, and am very determined to make drawing a full-time thing for me. I will be sharing bits of that progress here so let me know what you guys think. I have to say I am very proud of the support of the online illustration and animation community and am very grateful that we have this outlet to share work and inspire each other. I dig my Fabriano sketchbook the most because I can sop the watercolor on and it'll just take it. This is a doodle I did when I started to thinkin' about doing this kinda stuff for a living. I am at a crossroads again and I need to take a risk. I used to be all bravado about risks until I actually had security to lose. How many of you have made the leap to a career you didn't have the paper background in? How many potholes did you hit, tickets did you take, metaphors did you create and sustain too long?

Went to the Alexander Calder exhibit at the MOMA this weekend. I have to admit I was more into it than I was expecting to be. I know a trip to the museum will never disappoint in some way, I have too many faves in the permanent collection and the gift shop's wall of art books always demands careful inspection.
The exhibit focused on Calder's contribution to the Surrealist movement and had several other paintings and sculptures on eye.
Not to be pedestrian in the slightest, but really the mobiles and stabiles by Calder are fantastic. Living ink drawings to me and boy, that is right up my alley.
I love the amorphous rounded-edge shapes so consistent in that period that influenced past fine art and into my fave furniture, graphic design fallback cliche's, and commercial animation.

I superlove seeing where people make art. My fave so far is Ward Jenkins setup at Primal Screen. Here is where I currently make my scrbbles and paint dribbles.I used to have a studio downtown for the large making of messes but relocated a setup here at home as I don't focus on large paintings so much anymore. It is constantly evolving to maximize and accomodate new and different work habits, but its nearly there. I wish I never really had to leave it during the day.

been doing alot of quick sketches in black colored pencil and watercolor. I've been trying to focus on capturing a mood or motion, perhaps an atmosphere or personality without worrying about detail. Heaven knows I love to worry about detail, but this week, I've got other things to worry about.
I miss blogging frequently, but blog anxiety has had me in its clutches. Tragic, I know.

So I'm back from a lovely holiday in Canada. I took my sketchbook around beautiful Montreal and I will post some stuff from there soon. First I apologize to anyone who was led astray to the Balazo 18 show. Apparently something went down to which I have very few details as I was blissfully ignorant in Montreal but whatever happened, the show was cancelled and I did not get to update the post until it was after the fact. So I'm sorry if I did in fact ruin your evening. I will let you know as soon as I know where my cartoons are gonna go.
Tonight there is a release party for "Pet Noir, True Tales of San Francisco Pet Crime" a comic book anthology written by my friend Shannon that I did the cover for. Comics by the talented MariNaomi, August Bournique, BitterPie, N8 Vandyke and a gaggle of other cool cats. It is at Adobe Books,
3166 16th St. between Valencia and Guerrero, from 7pm to 10pm.People and art will be available for eyeballin', books will be available for purchase.
I want to briefly take an inward breath and hold for the friends and family of Joe Ranft who recently passed away tragically. Joe was an immense talent and inspiration as an artist and a person to his friends, family and for many people, who, like me, didn't know him personally but didn't have to. I've been amazed at all the posts I've seen by fans of his offering their condolences and gratitude for touching their lives from afar. For the people who did know and love him I offer my deepest sympathies.

I was looking at some old EC covers of Weird Science and Weird fantasy, particularly some illustrated by Jack Davis. I must've have seen those covers a dozen times, but I still get inspired by all those tiny lines amidst a rock solid composition. I can't help but be in awe of the sheer craftmanship in alot of golden age comic illustration. You can sense the time invested in each panel, the skill in each brushstroke. I can go on and on about the lines, but really the strength of those pieces lie in the firm grasp of basic visual storytelling. You look at a cover for Weird Science and you can't help but get drawn into that world and want to know what else happens inside.
I am no purist by any means, photocopied minimilist doodles are as much an inspiration to my work as any EC cover so rock on with comics in general.

My cousin is visiting from New Jersey today. She will be staying with me for the next few weeks in the name of Science. We will conduct experiments concerning East Coast/West Coast transplantation. I spent some unexpected free time at a cafe in North Beach today. It was very nice to sit and just focus on drawing even though I had enough coffee to drown a hippotamus. I didn't have much sleep, and when I laughed out loud at the sleep-dep story I was doodling, some of the other cafe patrons seemed a bit more wary. I like this little guy so much, I hope to fit him into the shorts book I am slowly creating. I also hope that I still like him after I've actually had a nap.

Been out of the sketchloop a bit as I've been working on a few new projects. Dayjobmonster has been more nightNdayjobmonster as of late forcing my personal projects deep into the cavernous shifty lands of Late/Early morning. It's not so bad there, my friends Kawfee and Headfonez are always fun to hang out with. Word has it Edison slept only twenty minutes a night or something and look at all the wonderful things he made! He also sent thugs out to beat patent violators with bats but hey, marvel at the electric filament bulb! Marvel I tell you.
So umm,
This painting was from my last show a million years ago. I wasn't sure if I was into it or not when I exhibited it, but it has grown on me since the show.
I think I like that it makes me anxious for the painting that should directly follow it, and maybe the one right before it. I have always wanted to do slightly narrative sequential paintings for a show but I wish I had thought of that while I was working on this one.
Too bad so sad.

It has been several years since I have smoked cigarettes. I smoked for a very long time and near the end there I was smoking like I was being sponsored. Cigarettes were a way for me to take a few minutes and step outside of whatever situation I was dealing with and "relax." Most commonly I would be working on a cartoon or painting and get severely frustrated with some incredibly important concern like Line Weight or some invisible Audience, and step outside on our back patio and light up. After exhaling several satisfying breaths and checking out the stars or the cats crawling along the fence, I would be reenergized to go back and tackle another sixty pages, inevitably to start the frustration cycle again.
I lived with a girl named Marie at the time, who was forever engaged in either the preparation of leaving or being gone. She had a tiny bathroom off the kitchen to herself that had a door to the patio. I stood there once, smoking, watching her perform intricate hair manipulation.
There are no tidy secrets embedded in this painting, but the rising water and the ominous background I'm sure reflect my frustrations, not so much with smoking, but for really understanding what vice is all about- my love for distraction, fear, and procrastination. Or whatever.

I started my day job four years ago, training with another girl who looked like she wanted be anywhere in the universe except there. I didn't give her too much thought at the time, I was pretty focused on looking busy and interested. We went our ways within the company, it wasn't until she was fired that we actually started hanging out. She moved into an apartment near mine. I would come over ,hang out on her roof under her laundry line and listen to Modest Mouse. Courtney was getting out of a relationship, I was just getting into one with a pianist that would turn into a lengthy lesson in existentialist angst. We would talk about music, art love and life, and enjoy being low maitenance friends.
As time progressed with the pianist, I started sharing a new art studio with another friend and was determined to chain-smoke, paint and be professionally moody. Courtney eventually took a job out in the sticks to teach, play violin and live in a snow hut. She would pop into town unannounced to hang out at random intervals and check out my new work. Her surprise visits became fewer and farther between until only postcards with no return addresses popped in.
I do miss Courtney, but I think that I really miss the shoestring lifestyle we enjoyed back then more, the simple pleasure of zero expectation company, the carefree discordant time of my life forever tied to Indian summer and Modest Mouse.
I made this painting at that studio for my Camus pianist girlfriend at the time, but alot of people who see it say the figure looks like Courtney. An old man in the street who saw the painting as I was carrying it to a show said the figure really looked more like me. Whomever the figure subconciously resembles, I think the thing that is more important to me about this painting is the feeling of wanting to be anywhere else but here and now, Someone noticing and the various events that follow.

There is a little takeout place near my house that always has the same people inside. I go there when I feel like I will bleed burrito and can not bring myself to go to the mexican place up the street another consecutive night. I sketched this at the counter while I waited for my order, marveling how many unlabeled switches lined the wall. How many lights and appliances could these possibly run? How do the little old waitresses remember which switch enables/disables what? Sweet mystery of life, at last I've found you.
In related news, I love my new travel watercolor set with a passion I usually reserve for animate objects.

Sketchcrawl Three

We couldn't have ordered a better day for Sketchcrawl this weekend. I had heard rumors of clouds and various north bay nastiness but we had nothing but sun sun sun all day. Forty artists from various locations met at the ferry building at ten a.m. on Saturday. From there we hiked and drew/painted down the Embarcadero, up the Filbert steps to Coit tower, had lunch in North Beach, loafed at Aquatic Park, ice cream at Ghiradelli Square and all met back at a brewery to share beer and the days sketchbooks. Met alot of nice new people that were open to share their sketches with me and the group. I had a great time within the group and when off on my own soaking in the sun, drawing and people watching. A big thank you to Enrico Casarosa for organizing this event and even printing Sketchcrawl shirts. Another thank you to Ronnie DelCarmen and all the participants who shared pencil lines and conversation round the table. Sigh.

My grandmother lives near the boardwalk in Asbury Park. I have alot of memories of the waterfront there, fragmented pictures of my parents are forever associated with that stretch of sand. I hadn't been there in a very long time, so under the semi-guise of doing research for a new book, I went and spent a week in New Jersey.
When I finally made it to the boardwalk on the last night of my visit, I found that the once vibrant buildings that housed the arcade and the merry-go-round (where my parents met) on the boardwalk were deserted and barely standing. I walked up and down the beach with my Mom and Dad in the cold ocean air and wondered why it felt like we were the last people on Earth.
I still have dreams about the boardwalk, twisted versions, a mix of fact and what I remember it to be. They never make sense after I wake up, but then rarely do any of my dreams.

I always make or enhance my gift wrapping for friends with sketchbook material. This is a bit that didn't survive the cutting and folding stage. Needless to say, my origami skills are sorely lacking so I've learned to not overdo it and just focus on which little drawing goes best with the recipient.

This little guy was in the corner of a comic page I did fairly recently. I was talking to my mother on the phone, telling her how much gray hair I have when I realized that I subconciously doodled this panel into the page. I ruined the continuity of the comic I was working on but I figure there must be a way to fit this water scene into a story set in an inner city. Darn grey hair.
I added in a quick watercolor touch just for the fun.

Sketchcrawlians share a complete day of drawing in a mad marathon across their respective landscapes meeting, swapping inspirations, sharing techniques and well, drawing. I participated in Sketchcrawl #2 right here in jolly old San Francisco. I had to go to work about half-way through (bummer) so I have made arrangements to not miss a minute of the next one. It was great to see a whole gaggle of artists, students and sketchers meet where the main influence is a passion for drawing! So if you are interested ( and you know you are) please meet up with a group in your area, or take your own marathon and share with the rest of us. Savor warm feelies that others across the globe are drawing with you.

Laundry Day is more of a general federal holiday and not to be taken literally. It is alot like Dishes Day and Trash Day.

So I finally just made this blog after much procrastination and excuse composing to myself. In keeping with my New Year's resolution to put things off less, I will post various drawings, doodles and my favorite Whatnot with high hopes of improving my output, receiving feedback, and maintaining the illusion of progress. It being early May and all, I think I'm off to a good start.
